When I was younger the idea of having kids was so weird to me. I knew that the day would come but was not excited about it really until I saw my best friend with her baby for the first time. She was so new at it and yet she was the best mom on the face of the earth, she was loving, caring, careful, gentle and all those good things that moms always are to their kids. I think it was because of her example that I thought that it could be done, that some day I could be that kind of mother and that all those beautiful things a mother is supposed to be would come to me just as they came to her the day her baby was born.
Well let me tell you, I am far from it. I have discovered that motherhood was not meant for me and that is for sure. What was I thinking? Not only did I think that I could handle it with one baby but thought that it could only get better with three more.... yeah, did not happen. I am still waiting for the
patience that I thought all mothers had and don't think it will come to me any time soon.
I guess we get the idea that being a mother is a beautiful thing and don't get me wrong, I do think it is a beautiful thing but I do not think that I am the best mother in the eyes of some other mothers out there. I have seen many moms (specially at church) being the perfect moms, having their kids throwing a fit and they still keep a loving face and talk to their kids with kind voices and then proceed to take them out, now do I know if they spank their kids in the bathroom, no and really do not care. I am sure that when my kids are throwing a fit my face does not look anything like that and I probably scare people, maybe that is why people don't talk to me :)
So why am I thinking of all this? No I did not have a horrible day at church with the kids, actually they were pretty good today, there was one moment when Shayna and Victor where talking to each other and out of respect for the people around us I tried to get Shayna's attention and in the end I ended up making more noise than they were making. The people around us were looking at me and I felt a little
embarrassed and then that made me think about my parenting skills and how I must seem like a horrible parent to most people.
It is something I have had to deal with since the moment I became a mom, I was not doing things right from the
beginning and people did not stop to think twice to let me know how many wrong things I was doing. I take pride in the fact that after 4 kids I might know a thing or two about kids and how to deal with them, at least that's what I think. I have never claimed or will never claim that I know it all, that what I have done works for every body or that every other mother out there is doing a rotten job at raising their kids.
I am not the kind of person that gives her opinion not even when asked on how things are supposed to be done with their kids because in the end what worked for me and my kids probably wont work for theirs. I appreciate the advice when I ask for it but feel that if somebody is telling me how to deal with my kids is because they do not approve.
Take it from me, just because I have 4 kids it does not mean that I am an expert or that I think I am an expert. I am a good observer and I always try to learn from other mothers, for example my sister in law
Tashia was a great a mom from the beginning, I learned a lot of tricks from her and
incorporated some of them into my parenting, my good friend Laurel was a very nurturing mom and has always try to feed her kids the right way, that stuck with me and when we go out to the park I always remember to bring baby carrots for snacks. Lisa my other sister in law has 9 kids and still finds time to have fun and be a fun mom, so obviously with 4 kids I should be able to be at least half as fun. Amber who has two cute little girls ( a newer mom) is very into reading to her kids so that is a great example to me and I try to find time to read to the little ones through out the day. (Those are the moms in the family I have come more in contact with) So there is a little of each of you in my parenting and I am sure that I will get to incorporate more as my kids grow.
I know that I am not the best mom, but my Heavenly Father thought that I could be the best mom for my kids, they make me feel that I am the best mom even when I have had a horrible day and their sweet lips kiss me at night. They are pretty good kids and I love them to death.
